Underwater Rack Teeth Repairs of Sagar Kiran
Awarded in 1991, this project was executed for ONGC, with DOEIL working
as subcontractor to Mazgaon Docks Ltd. The Rs. 228 lacs job entailed towing
this rig from Mumbai High to Nhava port, underwater cleaning of the spudcan,
cutting away damaged parts and, after replacement, towing the rig back
offshore.This work needs to be done in a dry environment, away from sea
water. For this purpose the rig needed to be docked. As no dry docks of
the required size were available in India, this was not an easy task.
DOEIL instead created a dry environment underwater using a cofferdam.
This entailed both the fabrication as well as deploying the cofferdam
offshore for fitting. Work was then carried out in this dry environment
underwater itself and the cofferdam was removed once the work was complete
so that the rig could be returned to the field.
